Podcast Equipment Checklist: What You Actually Need to Start (2026)

By Audio Gear Prices EditorialPublished May 8, 2026Updated June 6, 20261 min read

1. Microphone: The #1 Priority

Your microphone is the most important purchase. For untreated rooms: dynamic microphones (Shure SM58, Rode PodMic) reject background noise. For treated rooms: condenser microphones (Audio-Technica AT2020) capture more detail. The Samson Q2U ($59) is the best value starter mic — dynamic, USB/XLR hybrid, cables included.

2. Audio Interface (or USB Mic)

If using an XLR mic: any modern interface works. The Focusrite Scarlett Solo ($119) is the standard. If using a USB mic: no interface needed — plug directly into your computer.

3. Headphones: Closed-Back Only

Closed-back headphones prevent sound from bleeding into your microphone during recording. The Sony MDR-7506 ($79) is the broadcast standard.

Boom arm (~$39): frees desk space, consistent mic positioning. Pop filter (~$15): eliminates plosive sounds. Acoustic foam (~$30): reduces room echo. See our pop filter category and boom arm category.
