How to Position Studio Monitors in a Small Room (2026): Placement Guide for Accurate Mixing

The Equilateral Triangle Rule

Position your monitors and your head at the three corners of an equilateral triangle. The distance between the two speakers should equal the distance from each speaker to your ears. This ensures proper stereo imaging and balanced frequency response. The Yamaha HS5 and JBL 305P MkII both benefit significantly from correct placement.

Tweeter at Ear Height

Your ears should be level with the tweeters — the high-frequency drivers. If the monitors are too low, use isolation pads or stands. ISOAcoustics stands ($99) decouple the monitors from the desk, reducing bass resonance and improving clarity. Browse our studio monitor category for all options.

Distance from Walls

Rear-ported monitors (Yamaha HS5) need at least 12 inches from the rear wall. Front-ported monitors (KRK Rokit 5 G4) can be closer. If you must place monitors near a wall, use the boundary EQ switches (found on KRK and Kali monitors) to compensate. See our monitor buying guide for room-compatible picks.
